The Monumento a Colón was one of the historic monuments on Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City. It honored Christopher Columbus and reflected nineteenth-century public memory, when Columbus was often celebrated in civic monuments across Latin America.

In recent years the monument became politically contested because of changing views about colonization and Indigenous history. For citizenship learners, it is useful to know both its historical place on Reforma and that it is part of a broader debate about how public monuments should represent the past.
