Elvia Carrillo Puerto was a feminist, socialist organizer, and women’s rights activist from Yucatán. She worked for women’s suffrage, education, labor rights, and social reform in the early twentieth century.
She is sometimes called the Red Nun of Mayab because of her activism and commitment to social justice. For citizenship learners, Elvia Carrillo Puerto helps show that democracy in Mexico expanded over time and that women fought actively for political rights.
