Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez, often called La Corregidora, was a key supporter of the independence movement. She participated in the conspiracy of Querétaro and helped warn insurgent leaders when the plot was discovered.
Her warning helped accelerate the start of the uprising that became Mexico’s War of Independence. For citizenship learners, Josefa Ortiz is important because she shows the essential role women played in the independence movement, even when they did not always hold formal military or political power.
