Servando Teresa de Mier was a priest, writer, and political thinker from New Spain who became an important voice for independence. He criticized colonial authority and spent much of his life in exile, prison, and political conflict.

Mier is remembered as an intellectual precursor and supporter of Mexican independence. For citizenship learners, he shows that independence was also fought with ideas, speeches, writing, and arguments about sovereignty, not only with armies.
