Vicente Guerrero was an independence leader who continued fighting after many early insurgent leaders had been defeated. He helped bring the war to a conclusion through the Plan of Iguala and an alliance with Agustín de Iturbide.

Guerrero later became president of Mexico and is remembered for supporting the abolition of slavery. For citizenship learners, he is important as a hero of independence, a symbol of perseverance, and one of the key figures in the final achievement of Mexican independence.
