The Mayo, also known as Yoreme, live mainly in Sonora and Sinaloa. They are part of the Indigenous landscape of northwestern Mexico, a region that is sometimes less emphasized in basic introductions to Mexican Indigenous peoples.
For citizenship learners and expats, the Mayo help show that Indigenous Mexico includes desert, river, agricultural, and coastal regions as well as the better-known highland and southern areas. Their Yoreme identity connects language, ceremony, and community life in northwestern Mexico.
