The Mixtec people are mainly associated with the Mixteca region, which spans parts of Oaxaca, Guerrero, and Puebla. Mixtec languages are a diverse group, and many Mixtec communities maintain strong cultural identities both in their home regions and through migration to other parts of Mexico and the United States.

Historically, the Mixtec are especially known for pre-Hispanic and colonial-era codices that recorded dynasties, histories, and important events. For citizenship study, they are a useful example of Mexico’s rich Indigenous record-keeping traditions and of the cultural diversity found in southern Mexico.
