The Otomi, also known in some communities as Hnahnu, are an important Indigenous people of central Mexico. Many Otomi communities live in Hidalgo, Queretaro, the State of Mexico, and nearby states, with regional identities and language varieties that differ from place to place.

The Otomi have long been part of the history of central Mexico, including areas close to major colonial and modern cities. For expats and citizenship learners, they show that Indigenous Mexico is not limited to remote areas or archaeological sites; it is also present in the central regions where much of Mexico’s political and economic life developed.
