The Raramuri, also known as Tarahumara, live mainly in the Sierra Tarahumara in Chihuahua. Their homeland is part of the rugged Sierra Madre Occidental, a region of canyons, mountains, and remote communities.
The Raramuri are internationally known for long-distance running traditions, but their culture is much broader than that single fact. For citizenship learners, they help represent the Indigenous peoples of northern Mexico and show that Indigenous history and identity extend far beyond central and southern Mexico.
