The Tseltal, also spelled Tzeltal, are one of the major Indigenous peoples of Chiapas. Tseltal belongs to the Mayan language family and is one of the most widely spoken Indigenous languages in Mexico.
For citizenship study, the Tseltal are a strong example of Mexico’s pluricultural character: Indigenous languages and communities remain active parts of national life. Learning about the Tseltal also helps connect Chiapas with the wider Maya world and with modern questions of language rights and cultural recognition.
