Among the Aztec warriors there was a rival of Popocatépetl who also wanted to marry the princess Iztaccíhuatl. Jealous, he returned in secret to Tenochtitlan before the war ended and told the emperor and the princess a great lie: that Popocatépetl had died in battle. His lie caused the death of the princess and set the tragic ending of the legend in motion.
