Halach-Huinic — a Maya title meaning “true man” — was the cacique of Zací and the father of Hul-Kin, of the Cupul family. When he discovered his son’s secret romance with the granddaughter of the healer, protected by the rival Cocom family, he became furious.

To separate the lovers and strengthen his power, he sent Hul-Kin to the south to marry the princess of another territory and seal a political alliance. His decision set the tragedy of the legend in motion.
