The chilames were the seer-priests of the Maya: wise men who could read the future. In the legend, they had a terrible vision — strange men would arrive from far away and conquer the Mayab — and they warned the Maya people and the animals of what was coming.

It was also a famous Maya seer who made the great prophecy of the three signs that will one day announce the liberation of the Mayab.
