The rattlesnake (la serpiente de cascabel) was one of the three animals Itzamná chose for the Mayab. It made music with its rattles, filling the nights of the Mayab with song.

When the chilames announced the conquest, the rattlesnake abandoned its music and prepared to fight the invaders. In the prophecy, its sign is that one day it will make music with its rattles again.
