Article 1 is the foundation of modern constitutional rights in Mexico. It recognizes that all people in Mexico enjoy human rights and constitutional guarantees, requires authorities to protect those rights, prohibits discrimination, and states that slavery is forbidden.

For citizenship study, this is one of the most important article numbers to memorize. If a question asks which article abolishes slavery or broadly protects human rights and equality, the answer is Article 1.
