Francisco I. Madero challenged Porfirio Díaz and became a central figure at the start of the Mexican Revolution. His slogan “Sufragio efectivo, no reelección” called for real elections and an end to repeated presidential reelection.

Madero served as president from 1911 until he was overthrown and killed during the Ten Tragic Days in 1913. For citizenship learners, he represents democratic opposition to dictatorship.
