The Second Mexican Empire was the monarchy established with French support under Maximilian of Habsburg. It lasted from 1864 to 1867 and ended when republican forces defeated the empire.

For citizenship study, the empire is important because it shows the struggle between monarchy backed by foreign intervention and the republican government defended by Juárez.
