Altepetl was a Nahuatl term for a local city-state or political community. It literally evokes “water-mountain,” a way of imagining a people, territory, ruler, temple, and land as a political unit.

In New Spain, many Indigenous altepetl continued as local communities or towns under colonial rule. For citizenship and school-history purposes, it is useful for understanding Indigenous political geography.
