Tecpan is a Nahuatl term often used for a palace, government house, or seat of local authority. In Indigenous communities, it could refer to the place where rulers or officials conducted public business.

For New Spain history, tecpan helps learners recognize that Indigenous government had physical and institutional centers, some of which continued or adapted under colonial rule.
