Tlacuilo was a painter-scribe trained to record information in pictorial manuscripts or codices. Tlacuilos preserved histories, tribute records, maps, genealogies, and religious or calendrical knowledge.

In the early colonial period, Indigenous scribes and painters remained important because they helped record local knowledge in both Indigenous and colonial legal contexts.
