The Aztecs are the people of this legend. Before corn, they lived on roots and on the animals they hunted, and they were often hungry. It was they who asked Quetzalcóatl for help when the ancient gods failed.
With the corn Quetzalcóatl brought them, they were able to farm their own food. The people grew strong and rich, built great cities, palaces, and temples, and became one of the greatest civilizations of ancient Mexico.
