Chiclets is a brand of candy-coated chewing gum that originated in the United States but is very popular in Mexico.
The name ‘Chiclets’ is derived from ‘chicle’, a natural gum that has been harvested from the sap of the Sapodilla tree and used as a base for chewing gum for thousands of years.
The Mayans and Aztecs were the first to discover the use of chicle. They would cut the bark of the Sapodilla tree to let the milky white chicle ooze out and harden, and then chew it as a way to quench thirst or stave off hunger.
